I’m Officially A Beanstalk Reading Helper!

This week is Volunteer’s Week – a week dedicated to praising those who dedicate some (or all) of their free time to helping others. It’s currently trending all over Twitter with the hashtag #volunteersweek being used. If you’ve always thought about volunteering just even an hour or two to a charity of your choice, why not start now?

A few months back I saw a volunteer listing on the volunteering website, Do-It about becoming a volunteer reading helper. It involves dedicating 1.5hrs per day, twice a week to a primary school where you will be helping 3 children enjoy reading which will hopefully result in an improvement with their reading. The charity responsible for this wonderful scheme is called Beanstalk. You can click here to find out more about the charity.

I happily accepted the role after passing the interview which was conducted in two stages. I went to my primary school induction today and couldn’t feel more than happy in my new role… a Beanstalk reading helper! 🙂 I’ve been thinking about working with children for a little while now but wasn’t too sure about it so when I came across this role, I knew it’d be the perfect way for me to dip my toe into the water and give it a try. I am now really excited with how everything will progress.

I met my children yesterday and they were a lovely bunch; two shy ones and one lively one who reminds me of a family member so much. It’s refreshing to be around such bubbly characters and I really cannot wait to see how they will progress in their reading.

Get involved!

If you are interested in volunteering and would like to work in a school or with children for a couple of hours twice a week, become a volunteer Beanstalk Reading Helper. You can check for your local Beanstalk office and find out how to apply via the link below.

Have a great week!
